Lord Tiramo Blackiron Tiramo Blackiron, in normal times Governor of the Overlook Mountain District in Kharak, was appointed by the Hearthlord of Kharak Kashul to command Field Force Alexa. Having served for many years as a captain in the stronghold's hearthguard, he's a very capable and highly regarded combat commander. Gruff and very demanding as a commander, he also has a devilish sense of humor and a soft heart (usually well concealed). Note that he's wearing a tasseled red sash, symbol of his command over the field force. Lord Blackiron is a rarity among senior military officers a hands-on leader who also delegates authority well. |
Lieutenant Sela Poole Sela Poole is the senior Arkenlander in the headquarters element and serves as unofficial headquarters commandant. In normal times, she is one of the lieutenants of the South Arkenland Militia Company. In the field, she serves as the principal liaison with the Arkenlander forces already fighting the Bourouquienyi. Her companion, a great red owl she calls Tup, can distinguish Bourouquienyi from other peoples, and provides some airborne early warning capability for the field force. |
Uthothorulli Uthothorulli, one of the swamp folk of Yxtal, is an extremely powerful potentiating mage. Highly respected in the magical community of Weiland, she works with the other mages in the field force to coordinate the use of magic in the field. Note that she has one eye of dark gold and one of bright blue. This is apparently the result of her heavy use of magic over the years. |

Arnald Wardyworth Arnald Wardyworth retired several years ago as a colonel on the general staff of the Royal Army of Sorminia. He was long known as an excellent strategist and tactician, and has now come out of retirement to serve as an advisor to the field force commander. Short, arthritic and crotchety, he prefers the company of his parrot, Milicent, to that of human beings. (In case you're wondering, in Sorminia, unlike other countries, it is not customary to address retired military personnel by their active duty ranks.) |
Sergeant Regario Firehawk Sergeant Regario Firehawk is the non-commissioned officer in charge of the field force color detail. His regular duty is as a company sergeant in the Great Forest Guard, and he's a tough and battle-savvy NCO. Carrying and guarding a battle standard in combat are highly dangerous and very prestigious assignments, and the honor is traditionally given to the nation which provides the largest number of troops to a field force. This time, it was Great Forest Land and Lord Blackiron was quite pleased to see that. If you've checked out the contingent from Kharak already, you'll notice that the flail Sergeant Firehawk wields is quite different from that used by the dwarves. It has a much larger ball, with spikes instead of the dwarven metal nubs. There's also a counterweight on the other end of the staff, which enhances the accuracy of the weapon. |
Dette Roselake Dette Roselake is a rather junior trooper in the Great Forest Guard, now assigned as standard bearer for the field force. She was given the honor of this assignment by King Paolando in recognition of the courage and tenacity she displayed during a recent skirmish with rogue loggers. Although inexperienced, ahe's a tough and dauntless fighter. She also has the most wonderfully infectious grin ever seen in Weiland. |
Ghovra Goldmoth Trooper Ghovra Goldmoth is known as one of the Great Forest Guard's most highly skilled archers and has been assigned as the color guard. She uses a recurve bow rather unusual in Weiland which imparts added force to her arrows. Also note that, as is quite common in Weiland's fighting forces, the color detail pairs an archer with a user of a close-combat weapon, providing fighting power at distance and also inside the bow's effective range. |
Pers Veldon Pers Veldon, a standard whose family has lived for generations in Arkenland, is another member of the South Arkenland Militia Company detailed to the headquarters. In peacetime he operates a courier service in Arkenland, and is intimately familiar with the geography of the country. He is now serving as the headquarters scout. |
Emma Wrenk Emma Wrenk, the third South Arkenland Militia member detailed to the headquarters, handles much of the logistics of the element. She ia also the principal toter of the headquarters' gear. As she puts it, "I've always been a bit clumsy and not that great as a fighter, but I make a wonderful pack mule." She also has an excellent mind for details and is completely tireless. |

Holois Riverwalker Holois Riverwalker is from the dwarven town of Riverside, on the southern bank of the Turnanau River, which forms the border between Kharak and Yxtal. The banks of the river are swampy and swarm with alligators. Holois is one of the small number of Riversiders who have taken up the trade of employing alligators as security beasts and to fend off some of the even nastier critters which infest the Yxtal swamplands and venture across the river. Holois and her alligator, Zodus, provide security for the headquarters during hours of darkness. Note the prod Holois carries and the bullwhip hanging from her belt. Turnanau alligators can not be trained or domesticated, but they can be controlled. The prod and whip are used for this, even though the alligator's thick hide is completely impervious to them. Luckily, the Riversiders discovered years ago that the alligators were too stupid to realize this. The crack of the whip and poke of the prod (if used properly) intimidate the beasts. |

Jacquette Embersong Jacquette Embersong is the Goldlight elves' contribution to the headquarters. You'll note that her uniform is different from that of other members of the Goldlight contingent, that her sword is not gold-plated, and that she has a cute pug nose unusual in an elf. All this is significant, as is the fact that she's been in military service less than five months. She's not a member of the Royal Army of Goldlight; rather, she's a new member of the Sandlake Province Guard. Further, she's one of the Nectrian elves, considered by other Goldlighters to be a rather inferior people. Assignment to the headquarters of an inexperienced member of a provincial guard and a member of a "low-class" element of society was the Goldlighters' none-too-subtle snub at the field force's dwarven commander. Lord Blackiron's reaction was typical of him. Rather than taking offense, he had the Great Forest Elves check the girl out for a few days, during which they found her to be terribly green, but also smart, eager to learn, and willing to pull more than her weight. Then, to the astonishment of Jacquette and the consternation of the Goldlight elves, he appointed her his backwatcher. It's common in Weiland military units for commanders to appoint backwatchers, whose duty is to "watch the commander's back" while he or she focuses on battle management. Such an appontment, of course, implies a great deal of trust on the commander's part and is considered a significant honor. |

Tipra Stoneblade Tipra Stoneblade, a young and very cute Kharak dwarf, is something of an enigma to most members of the field force. Speculation has it that she's (1) the commander's niece and ward, (2) the commander's secretary, or (3) a camp follower brought along by the commander for a bit of off-duty dalliance. None of these guesses hits the mark. (1) Tiramo Blackiron was an only child. (2) The commander doesn't need a secretary. (3) Dwarves don't hold with dallying with camp followers. The truth is much more interesting and known only to members of the headquarters and the commanders of other field force contingents. To be let in on the secret, click here. |
